WELCOME TO THE 24th EDITION OF THE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS PODCAST

Your body: Vitamin D again: Diabetes

Your body and a car are similar with one big difference. Your car needs fuel, oil changes, maintenance and replacement every ten or so years.
Your body needs food, vitamins, exercise, and TLC. The difference is if you take care of the body it is capable of self repair. Treat your body right and it is good for 100 years or more.

For dry macular degeneration (AMD) research from the Age Related Eye Diseases Study (AREDS) found that taking high dose supplements, containing vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, copper and zinc helps slow disease progression in people who are at risk.

In a randomized, placebo-controlled study from the Creighton University School of Medicine, of 1,179 postmenopausal women, those taking nearly three times the recommended dose of vitamin D, plus calcium, reduced their relative risk of cancer by 60%.
The women in the study took 1,100 IU of Vitamin D3, plus 1,400 to 1,500 mgs, daily of extra calcium. Those taking only supplemental calcium, experienced no significant risk reduction.
The current upper limit for vitamin D in both the US and Europe is 2,000 IU a day. An article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that the upper limit should be increased to 10,000 IU a day.

If you give up a particular food for 3 weeks your desire for it will significantly decline. It’s important not to cheat. Even one slip will reactivate your craving.

Diabetes is a terrible disease if left untreated. It is a disease where the cells become less sensitive to insulin. As the cells become less sensitive the pancreas produces more and more insulin until it becomes less able to produce insulin. So the diabetic takes oral drugs that stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. If that does not work then you have to start injecting insulin.

If diabetes was only a matter of controlling blood sugar diabetics would not be having the troubles they have. Other problems such as elevated insulin and blood lipids. Excessive inflammation and increased free radical activity also contribute to the disease.

There are things to do to make the cells more sensitive to insulin. Regular exercise decreases insulin resistance.

Diabetes damages the blood vessels large and small. Particularly hard hit are the vessels of the eyes, kidneys and nerves.

There are alternative treatments. For ulcers that do not respond to antibiotics, increase your nutrition and vitamins.
Pack the wound with white sugar, which creates an environment in which no bacteria can survive.

Taking alpha lipoic acid 400 to 800 mg. acetyl -L-carnitine 500 to 1000 mg. and fish oil 2-8 gms. also a high potency multi vitamin and B-complex-100 in addition to your standard treatment will be helpful If you have any doubts check with your doctor.

That’s all for PODCAST #24. I hope you found it interesting and informative. The next PODCAST will be the week of June 1
